Armando Machado obtained his Ph.D at Duke University in 1993 and then moved to Indiana University where he taught for eight years. He returned to Portugal in 2001 to join the Universidade do Minho where he teaches psychology and runs an experimental lab. His research deal with basic learning processes.

Prof. Machado is interested in the principles of learning in animals and humans. He is currently studying the topics of choice, timing, number, and behavioral variability. He also develops mathematical models as a means to test our current understanding of learning principles. His other interests include developmental psychology, epistemology, and philosophical aspects related to behaviourism.

He is Associate Editor of Psychonomic Bulletin & Review, and a member of the editorial board of the Journal of the Experimental Analysis of Behavior , Behavior and Philosophy, and Animal Learning & Behavior. He is also the current President and the past Program Director of the Society for the Quantitative Analyses of Behavior (SQAB).

At AILUN Prof. Machado lectures on the basic principles of behaviorism, how they can be represented in mathematical models and give the students live demonstrations of classical conditioning and operant conditioning (shaping).
